Yesterday was the New Moon in Libra, and goodness did I feel it. All day I had this deep urge to connect with my goals and intentions, all coincidentally, with the theme of balance in mind. Libra is the sign of the scales, weighing out options, ideas and choices, in order to create balance.
Get Quiet....
I spent some time alone first, listening to soft music and eventually inviting in quiet. New Moons (or Dark Moons) feel richest when I connect with the quieter parts of myself. This isn't the deep excavating that can happen at the Full Moon, which often sheds light on our unconscious mind. New Moon energy feels more like sitting in stillness. Its like a deep meditation that unearths rich soul information - a place where darkness and quiet allow for connections to be made.
Monkey Mind...
I then went to my journal to capture my thoughts and intentions for the weeks to come until the Full Moon. I was able to write down a few, but then, just like in meditation - small thoughts began to creep in. Call your sister. Email your friend. Pay the milk man. I tried to swat the little thoughts away - after all I was here to do deep work. Not play around with what Buddhist meditation teacher Pema Chodron calls "monkey mind" - where your mind is a monkey, swinging from branch to branch, each branch a new thought.
Making space for the Big Stuff...
But the small thoughts persisted and I gave in. These small thoughts needed attention before I could move on to my bigger soul work. On a new page I wrote: "Brain Dump: Clearing Space for the Big Stuff to Happen" and made a list of every small thought, to-do and idea that popped into my head. It took me no time at all, because it was all floating on the surface. Once I got them on paper, it was so easy to let them just live there. I didn't need to hold them. They just needed a small amount of attention and a place to breath.
Intentions of the heart...
Moving forward...
I slept well last night (aside from the frequent pregnancy bathroom visits!) because I wasn't holding on so tightly to the small things and was able to connect with the big things. I looked at my lists this morning and feel good about the days to come until the Full Moon. There is plenty do to, both big and small.
I hope you have a moment to connect with your BIG self in the days to come and have a place, such as your journal, that can hold your smaller self while you do that important work.
