Bulbs are starting to burst through the ground. The dregs of winter are melting slowly, but surely, away in grey heaps. Now is a time to shed residue of what is no longer wanted. To release what no longer serves. To make space for light and warmth and growth.
Many wise women before us have deep cleaned living and gathering spaces with the coming of spring. Of course, with more light we are more able to see the caked muck on our floors, the tracked in dirt and evergreen needles. The mire of the past becomes more visible and we are called to cleanse.
Spring also ushers in the possibility for growth. Almanacs tell us this is a potent time for planting. The earth warms, saturates with the dissolution of winter, and readies for new things. We can follow the lead of these natural, phenological processes and open ourselves to possibility for new experience, wisdom, and beauty to burst forth.
To welcome in spring, Moon Woman Rising has put together a series of recipes for spring cleaning both our spaces and our spirits.
Simple cleaning solution
Many store bought cleaning supplies are filled with harsh chemicals and irritating artificial colors and fragrances. Creating a wholesome, effective all-purpose cleaning solution is quite simple.
- Citrus peel
- White vinegar
- Mason jar
Gather the citrus peels from the citrus you eat in a small mason jar. Fill the jar with white vinegar enough to cover the peels. You can do this over several days or weeks. Once the jar is filled, add in several sprigs of parsley. Cover with a lid and, place in a cool, dark place for at least two weeks. Strain the mixture through a sieve into a large bowl. Measure vinegar and mix with water in a 1:1 ratio. You can use this cleaner as you would any all-purpose cleaner. Here are some versatile ideas: Put in a spray bottle clean surfaces. Add ¼ cup to a 1 cup of water, and microwave on high for several minutes to cleanse your microwave of odor. Add a ½ tsp of baking soda to a ½ cup for toilet bowl cleaning.
Like our spaces and our bodies, our crystals can become caked in negative energies. This recipe for crystal cleaning clears and reprograms these vital energetic assets.
- Crystal needing re-energizing
- Full moon light
- Small natural cloth such as silk or linen
- Optional: Yarrow flower essence (recipe follows) or obsidian pyramid.
Wrap the crystal affected by negative energy in a soft cloth. Place in the direct light of the moon for one full night. You might also place an obsidian pyramid next to the crystal. Obsidian is a protective stone, which also quite effectively removes negative energy. You may also sprinkle the wrapped stone with yarrow flower essence before sunrise. Yarrow flower essence supports connecting with authentic, intrinsic energy, and will strengthen the crystal’s bond to its essential energetic intention.
Yarrow flower essence
Yarrow is a flower with many unique properties including a powerful ability to balance energy. Flower essences are a complex science. Begin with this simple, versatile essence which can be applied to objects, or taken as a tincture.
- Yarrow flower
- Distilled water
- Glass bottle or jar
- Organic alcohol (at least 40% proof, such as vodka)
Seek out wild growing yarrow, growing in a clean, toxin-free environment. Do not pick the first blossoms you find. Instead, practice sustainable harvesting and pick neither the first nor last blossoms you see. Select 6-12 blossoms and place in your glass jar or bottle. Cover with distilled water and alcohol in a 1:1 solution. Place your essence in direct moonlight overnight. Shake to activate the essence. Then, use as desired.
As the spring comes, bring lightness into your life with deep breath and focused attention.
Sit up straight and comfortably in a simple seat, either on a floor cushion, or in a chair. Begin to drop your attention to the sensation of your breath, without judgement. Focus your attention in this way for some minutes. Then, begin to actively draw warmth into your body with each inhale. This can be in the form of a color, or sensual perception, or simply a concept. Try not to hold onto what warmth is or looks like or feels like. Instead, just allow warmth to realize in the ground of the body with each inhale. With every exhale let go of what does not serve you. Just like cleaning the floor caked in a past season, or weeding a garden, allow each exhale breath to be a release of the now visible much, a clearing of what is unwanted and crowding out space. No need to judge these things now to be let go. This residue is simply part of the fullness of life’s seasons. Allow yourself to sit in this meditation for at least 5 minutes. At the conclusion of your meditation, place your hands over your heart. Take in one full breath of gratitude for the time to sit. One full exhale wishing others to also have time to open for growth.
